Steven Fleming is an architect, author and bicycle flâneur whose work explores what bicycles reveal about cities and what cities reveal about ourselves.
He is the author of Cycle Space and Velotopia, books that helped establish cycling as an architectural and urban design question rather than merely a transport issue. His writing has appeared in publications ranging from peer-reviewed journals to The Guardian, ArchDaily and CityLab, while his ideas have been featured by Fast Company and other international media.
Over the past two decades he has advised governments, public agencies and industry leaders in Australia, Singapore, China and Colombia on the relationship between cycling, architecture and urban development. He has delivered keynote addresses throughout Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas, including appearances in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Nijmegen, New York, Singapore, Bogotá, Vancouver and Oslo.
Steven's work has attracted attention from both the built-environment professions and the bicycle industry. He has contributed to international discussions on the future of urban cycling with organisations including Shimano and was curator of the first Bicycle Architecture Biennale, an exhibition showcasing architecture inspired by the bicycle.
Unlike many commentators on cities and transport, his perspective is grounded in lived experience. He has spent a lifetime travelling, commuting, racing and touring by bicycle, raised his children largely car-free, and explored countless cities from the saddle of the same single-speed Brompton that accompanied him to speaking engagements around the world.
A former university lecturer and researcher, Steven continues to write, photograph, travel and speak on architecture, cycling, culture and urban life. He currently serves as a member of the NSW Northern Regional Planning Panel.
