In 1994, as a young architect with Singapore’s Housing & Development Board, I had the rare opportunity to single-handedly design what has become one of Singapore’s most popular community parks in Serangoon. Given a 2.4-hectare site, a generous budget and rare design freedom, I was able to design a lush, forested park inspired by the cosmology of the mandala, with grade-separated routes separating people crossing the park from those using its running and cycling track.
